The Table of Contents

Linking Sub-Items

Sub-items can be created within a TOC by linking to elements within a linked page. This allows a single page to have multiple TOC links which is useful in longer topics.

The following elements within a page can be linked to the TOC :

  • Bookmarks

  • Headings

  • Paragraphs

  • Ordered List Items (bullets and numbering)

  • Unordered List Items

  • Definition List Items

  • Table of Content

  • Dropdowns

  • Expanding Text

  • Micro Content

  • Styles

Bookmarks

An element within a topic can be bookmarked specifically, or any style with the h-prefix can be identified as a bookmark. Styles in this documentation include h1, h2, h3, h4 and h5. Text with <h> styles are useful tags to bookmark an item in the TOC.

To link a 'style' bookmark in the TOC, do the following :

  1. Make sure the topic page is already linked in the TOC.

  2. Click onto the TOC item, then select the Create a New Item (icon) from the TOC toolbar. This will automatically create an indented sub-item.
  3. Right-click onto the newly created item and select Properties.
  4. Navigate to General > Label and input a suitable name for the sub-item
  5. Navigate to the File Name field and select the file name of the topic.
  6. Navigate to the Link field and click onto the Select Bookmark (icon).
  7. From the Select Bookmark page, use the Headings dropdown and select a sub-item from the list. Sub-items are typically an item listed as h2 or h3. Click OK.

Selecting a heading as a bookmark to create a sub-item

  1. The bookmarked item is shown in the TOC as #, indicating that a specific item is identified as a sub-item in the TOC.

Sub-Item tagged as #

  1. The tagging of the heading bookmark is added to the topic as shown below. This indicates that the heading has been specifically tagged for inclusion in the TOC.
